Slightly on the outskirts of downtown Okino-shima, the main town in the south of Dogo Island, this shrine hosts the Gorei-furyu festival every year in early June. During this Shinto ritual, eight sacred horses are launched towards Hai-den in full gallop while brave riders attempt to hang on for dear life. The main building, built in the local architectural style, is right alongside the old thatched-roof home of the Oki-ke family and a magnificent giant cedar tree, over 2,000 years old.
